ART 148 section 1 Barrio Arts for Ethnic Groups

Project Description: Students will be required to collaborate with their classmates to develop an art project or lesson plan that they will implement as a group at the Washington Neighborhood Center in the Alkali Flats neighborhood. The projects will be designed to serve the needs of the individuals whom the students will be working with at the center as well as the students themselves. Through the process, the students will help provide valuable cultural programming to these individuals as they assist the students in applying and refining their academic experience for application in real-life life situations. In effect, these projects will be collaborations between the students, acting as ambassadors of Sacramento State, and the people in the Alkali Flats community. The projects that they develop will act as a model for future academic/community collaborations.

Project Description: The objective of the first year seminar is to introudce students to the nature and possible meaning of higher education and the functions and resources of the University, demonstrate active learning and improvement of intellectual skills & develop acquisition of organized knowledge. In that context, it is the goal of this particular course to have students also reflect, analyze and take action on how their education and future goals/interests can be utilized to service the community. Thus students will be involved with the following learning activities with respect to their projects: actual participation in the project (20 hours for the semester), journal reflections, and a photovoice project to present and utilize to assist the organization.
